Silicon carbide is comparable to the material of diamond

Silicon carbide, widely known as carborundum, (diamond name: diamond marrow) is a ceramic compound as formed by integrating silicon and carbon bond. Silicon carbide exists in nature by means of such rare mineral as Moissanite, and so far it is widely applied to the manufacturing of high-temperature, high-voltage semiconductor. Through Lely method, large pieces of silicon carbide single crystal can be formed. Artificial Moissanite gem is obtained by cutting large silicon carbide single crystal as prepared by Lely method.

Moissanite is another form of silicon carbide and has been sold as a gem whose hardness is near that of the diamond. But it is more transparent, and therefore adds color to the increasingly diversified ceramic materials.
